Mother’s missing husband faces jail time, $250,000 fine after illegal short-barreled rifle is found

SAN ANTONIO – The husband of Suzanne Simpson, an Olmos Park woman who has been missing for more than a week, is now facing federal firearms charges. On Tuesday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) released an affidavit charging Brad Simpson with unlawful possession of a short-barreled rifle (SBR).

A CLEAR Alert was issued for Simpson’s wife, Suzanne, after she reported her disappearance on October 6. After an investigation, Brad Simpson was arrested and charged with domestic violence.

After a warrant was executed by Olmos Park Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety, a family member informed police that Simpson possessed several firearms that he wanted to surrender.

An affidavit released by the ATF states that the family member recovered several firearms and suppressors from a secure room in Simpson’s home and transported them to the Olmos Park Police Department.

One of the surrendered firearms was identified as a “Short Barreled Rifle” (SBR), or a rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches.

During a search to determine if the firearm was registered to Simpson, authorities determined that the rifle was not registered to Simpson.

Under the National Firearms Act, any rifle with a barrel less than 16 inches must be registered with the ATF and subject to a $200 tax stamp fee.

Simpson, whose bail is set at $2 million, was placed under federal detention by the ATF, meaning he could not be released if he posted bail.

If convicted, Simpson faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for unlawful possession of the SBR.
