Three takeaways from Georgia’s wild win against injury-plagued Florida

Well, that was weird.

We had a lot of injuries, a lot of late-game changes and a lot of tough decisions. But in the end, Georgia found a way to win a 34-20 thriller against Florida.

Carson Beck overcame a disastrous start to lead Georgia back against an injury-depleted Florida team.

Here are three takeaways from Georgia’s win in Jacksonville:

1. DJ Lagway left the game with a “major” hamstring injury (and an advantage)

With 4:30 left in the second quarter, the “worst case scenario” presented itself for Florida. Lagway suffered a hamstring injury while trying to gain yardage. Lagway was taken off the field while Florida led 10-3 thanks to a deep shot that scored against Aidan Mizell. Billy Napier said the 5-star true freshman’s injury was “significant.”

It was certainly a “significant” drop with preferred transfer Yale/Aidan Warner. Florida’s third-string quarterback, Graham Mertz, already suffering a season-ending knee injury against Tennessee, found himself in a tough situation against Georgia’s defense.

Warner led Florida down the field for a game-tying scoring drive after UGA scored 2 consecutive touchdowns. But his late interception of CJ Allen was all she wrote about Florida’s attempt to make a surprise bid.

Florida struggled and did so without its 2 best quarterbacks (Lagway and Mertz), its 2 best cornerbacks (Jason Marshall Jr. and Dijon Johnson), its best receiver (Tre Harris) and its best running back (Montrell Johnson Jr.). But in the end, a Florida team without Lagway didn’t have enough to overcome a relentless Georgia.

2. Carson Beck was… a lot

Beck threw 3 interceptions for the second straight game. Yes. In 2 games, Beck threw as many interceptions as he did in the entire 2023 season. If that doesn’t tell you how different Beck has been, I don’t know what will. It was mostly a day to forget for the Georgia quarterback in his hometown.

However, after those 3 interceptions, he was 12 of 14 for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns. Just like he did with that important third-quarter drive in Texas, Beck shook off those mistakes late. His 3rd-and-7 conversion against Arian Smith in a 20-20 game in the 4th quarter was the play of the day.

Beck continues to have extremely high highs and extremely low lows. It remains to be seen if that will stabilize down the stretch.

The only thing that mattered Saturday was that he found a way to rebuild momentum when necessary.

3. UGA now has to hit the road against a potentially desperate Ole Miss team.

And by the way, Ole Miss defeated Arkansas and will enter the matchup with the No. 1 scoring defense in America due to a vastly improved defensive line. That is, a defensive line that was built with teams like Georgia in mind.

In other words, Beck is in for a big test after the struggles he’s shown over the past month. A guy with consecutive 3-interception games won’t see a lack of pressure in a hostile atmosphere. Ole Miss is clinging to playoff hopes with 2 losses, while UGA will look to preserve its SEC championship hopes.

But arriving in Oxford with a defeat was the only focus of Saturday. Georgia took a roundabout route to get there, but left Jacksonville with a victory.
