Train involved in incident that ended in leg amputation in the city center

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -BNSF Railway has confirmed that one of its trains was involved in an incident Monday evening that ended with the amputation of a woman’s leg.

The incident happened on East Harbor Drive near the convention center as people were leaving the Rady Shell after a concert.

San Diego police say a woman and several others tried to crawl around a stationary train when the train started moving, causing several people to fall.

The woman fell under the train and was run over, and her leg had to be amputated.

BNSF Railway says the incident is currently under investigation.

On Tuesday, people who work downtown told ABC 10News they regularly see freight trains blocking intersections and crossings.

They say people get impatient and crawl through or around the train cars.

“I see people running through there all the time, I see people going around, so when the train is almost at the end to go around it, they go around it, I see. People sometimes jump through, sometimes on their bikes, like we go around it quickly,” says Rhiawna Samudio, who works nearby.

Pedicab drivers in the area say they see the same problem with people climbing on and through trains when they are stationary.

“It takes about 20 to 25 minutes, sometimes even longer, so people get desperate and cross the train,” said Maycl Soto, a pedicab driver who regularly works downtown.

The woman involved in Monday’s incident has not yet been identified.
