Fall yard cleanup means leaves and yard waste piled up at the Olmsted County Compost Site

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) –Dozens of people stopped by the Olmsted County composting site Friday to get rid of dead leaves and yard waste.

The mounds of brown leaves will turn into compost in two or three months. Rochester city ordinance prohibits residents from leaving leaves on city streets.

Anthony Wittmer, communications specialist for the Olmsted County Department of Environmental Resources, said residents can dispose of leaves at the site. You can also get rid of your pumpkins, but you must remove the candles. Tree branches should not be brought to the site.

“Take the bags, we don’t want that in the compost, no branches, no sticks,” he said. “If you’re going to bring pumpkins to the site, make sure you bring the candles, the tea lights or the little, you know, electric candles, take them out of the pumpkins, because obviously we don’t want that in the finish. compost.”

Thousands of people visit the place from the time the leaves begin to fall until mid-November, according to Wittmer. He said it is also against Minnesota state law to throw leaves in the trash.

For more information on what items are acceptable or unacceptable for compost, you can visit the county’s page. website.
