Recent Jets roster move may seal Chargers-Mike Williams reunion

He Los Angeles Chargers could be in the market for wide receiver help before the Nov. 5 trade deadline (fans hope so), but the options for a quality addition are becoming increasingly limited.

Other contending teams have already made moves to acquire Amari Cooper, Deandre Hopkins and Diontae Johnson, but the Chargers are rumored to be interested in bringing in Mike Williams, their former first-round pick, who left this season in free agency. Williams is now with the New York Jets, but has been used sparingly in recent weeks, particularly after the team acquired Davante Adams in a trade of its own.

Williams was good when healthy for the Chargers, but that wasn’t enough and he was probably a big contributor to the team moving on from him this offseason. That said, he would be a solid addition to the team’s current wide receiver group, which has dealt with a number of injuries so far this season.

But the Jets can ruin any hope of this becoming a reality.

On Thursday, the Jets placed wide receiver Allen Lazard on injured reserve with a chest injury. He will be asked to miss at least the team’s next four games.

The Jets have an incredible one-two punch with Adams and Garrett Wilson, but the loss of Lazard, combined with their win over the Houston Texans on Thursday night, could change things. That victory could take the Jets out of “seller” status and more into the side of not being willing to part with any assets.

That could include Williams, who the team might need to take on a more prominent role without Lazard and considering this wild play by rookie Malachi Corley on Thursday night.

The Chargers may want to bring Williams back, but the Jets may not be listening to offers.

If Mike Williams isn’t available, what will the WR trade market look like?

The Chargers may have to consider a minor addition with all the big names having already found new teams or perhaps simply not being for sale.

Darius Slayton of the New York Giants and KJ Osborn of the New England Patriots are some options that could be available. Although it would require a much larger return, Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals is constantly connected to trade negotiations.

In a matter of days, fans will see if the team decides to make a move or if it has to face the remainder of the season with the receivers already on the roster.
