Tamworth shock former winners Huddersfield to book a place in the Emirates FA Cup second round

National League Tamworth produced the first surprise of the Emirates FA Cup First Round with a 1-0 victory over League One Huddersfield.

Tom Tonks’ throw-ins caused the Terriers problems from the first minute and it was his missile on the stroke of half-time that marked the difference between both teams.

Tonks scored twice in the opening minutes at The Lamb Ground as the hosts got off to a commanding start, but it was Town’s Tom Iorpenda who came closest to opening the scoring early on with a shot that went over the post.

Michael Duff’s side then went close through Ollie Turton and Bojan Radulović, but Tamworth steadily grew into the game and felt they could have been awarded a penalty after another threatening shot from Tonks.

Dan Creaney then headed in from a difficult angle as Tamworth continued to pose problems for the Town rearguard, but as half-time approached Jasbir Singh had to be alert to deny Iorpenda from close range.

The visiting team were left to rue a missed opportunity moments later when another Tonks shot finally ended in a goal as goalkeeper Chris Maxwell could only reach into his net amidst a crowd of bodies.

Town continued forward after the break but struggled to convert too many clear chances.

Half-time substitute Callum Marshall shot wide and Ben Wiles crossed goal in the dying moments, but Tamworth held on to secure a memorable victory.

In Friday night’s other match, Notts County came back from a goal down to secure a convincing 5-1 victory over Alfreton Town at Meadow Lane.

After a spirited start between the League Two and National League big guns, it was the underdogs who struck first.

Liam Waldock was quickest to react to a blocked Jake Day shot, firing home from 12 yards to send the departing fans into a frenzy.

Their joy was short-lived, however, as the hosts hit back just two minutes later after Matty Platt’s speculative shot from distance deflected past helpless Reds goalkeeper George Willis.

Josh Martin fired a couple of shots from distance but Alfreton enjoyed their own moments of promise before the break with Adam Lund causing problems in open play and long throws.

It didn’t take long for County to take the lead after the break, showing their class with a clean move on the edge of the area.

After a low cross from Jevani Brown, the county’s top scorer Alassana Jatta scored the first of the night.

That proved to be a turning point as County asserted their dominance and, after being denied once by Willis, Gambian Jatta seized a one-on-one opportunity to put daylight between the sides.

That’s when Brown came up late as he scored his first two goals for his new club. The first came from the penalty spot after Ryley Reynolds was fouled before the Bristol Rovers loanee scored a rebound from Kellan Gordon’s rejected effort to add extra sparkle to the scoreline.
