Bears insist on keeping Tyrique Stevenson’s status a secret

The Bears’ starting lineup could be greatly affected by injuries and is also likely to be affected by disciplinary action.

Coach Matt Eberflus did not reveal whether cornerback Tyrique Stevenson would face discipline in the form of a suspension or fine on Friday.

If he is not a starter, it would not be the first time this year.

Stevenson had been facing the wrong direction, yelling at fans as Sunday’s final Hail Mary against Washington unfolded. Stevenson also botched the play and then passed the ball to the man he was supposed to cover to get the points Washington needed to win 18-15.

“I’m not going to talk about who’s going to start at that particular spot,” coach Matt Eberflus said. “Again, I talked to Tyrique. He’s had a really good week of practice. He’s done well refocusing.

“And I appreciate their efforts to move on to the next phase, which is Arizona.”

Eberflus was asked about the importance of who started the first game of the season at cornerback. Stevenson did not start that game and Terell Smith did, but Stevenson came on shortly after the game started.

Stevenson also missed the game in London, but it was due to a calf injury suffered in practice.

“We have rotations for a reason,” Eberflus said. “It could be competition. It could be that a guy comes back and his workload needs to be reduced.

“It could be several things.”

Eberflus was a little more open about the injuries. The Bears could get Kyler Gordon back at cornerback after a limited practice on Friday, his first since a hamstring injury in London. It is questionable. Defensive end Montez Sweat is also questionable because of a shin injury that kept him from playing in the decisive play last week. He had a limited practice Thursday, but no others, and the Bears have the 48 hours until the game to help with healing so their best pass rusher can start.

Safety Jaquan Brisker’s absence again will surprise some. He hasn’t played since Oct. 6 following his third concussion.

“It’s really just the symptom part,” Eberflus said. “That’s really what it is. Again, you’ve made progress. You’ve participated in the meetings, you’ve participated in the tour and you’ve addressed those things and then you have those symptoms.

“Again, it’s always going to be about his safety and his health and where he’s at. Jaquan brings a lot of passion and energy to our team and certainly to our defense. He was having a really good year before this. His health and safety “It comes first and we want to make sure we do a good job with that first and then he’ll get that passion and energy back like he always does.”

The other big question is what their offensive line will be like. Eberflus echoed offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in saying they prefer to keep subs one at a time rather than create confusion by moving a starter to another position, which then makes it two position changes.

They will be without left tackle Braxton Jones due to a knee injury and backup Kiran Amegadjie has a calf injury. So, it seems likely that Larry Borom will play after spending the entire season on injured reserve with an ankle issue dating back to training camp.

This would allow them to keep Matt Pryor at right guard. The only issue here might be if Teven Jenkins’ knee injury is too serious to allow him to play. He didn’t practice Thursday and was limited Friday.

Depth could be limited at guard and it was thought backup guard Ryan Bates could come off injured reserve as his window to be reinstated opened.

“We’ll see where Ryan is,” Eberflus said. “The first day Ryan was moving again was today, so we’ll see where it goes.”
