‘I didn’t want to die that way’

Chaos engulfed downtown Orlando when a 17-year-old allegedly opened fire during Halloween celebration early Friday, and many partygoers were terrified they would die in the attack.

“It was the biggest scare I’ve ever had,” Joey Herrera, 22, who was at the celebration with his girlfriend and some other friends, told The Post.

“I was afraid they would kill me and I didn’t want to die that way.”

At the Mondrian Apartments, a high-rise building a block from the shindig, terrified partygoers crowded the lobby as police cars whizzed by. The complex, normally closed to non-residents, opened its doors to those fleeing for safety.

“It was chaos, panic and terror,” said a front desk employee. “The scariest thing I can remember.”

At least two people were killed and six others were wounded in the mass shooting, police said.

Edgar allegedly attempted to flee the scene, but a police officer who saw him pull the trigger immediately tackled him to the ground before three other police officers pounced on him.

During an early morning news conference, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said Florida’s new constitutional gun law has changed the way officers keep the area safe.

“We used to do lockdowns, we had dogs and all that,” Smith said. “That all went away when the law changed and you can basically carry a gun in public as long as you meet certain criteria. “So when that changed, we wouldn’t be able to do it anymore.”

“We couldn’t do the dogs we had at the center anymore,” Smith continued.

“We are working with the city, working with the downtown clubs to determine if there is anything else we can go to to keep it safe there. With so many people down there, we have no idea what people are carrying with them.”

The motive has not yet been announced and the names of the victims have not been released. It is unclear whether Edgar has hired an attorney authorized to speak on his behalf.
