Crowds are reminded to take precautions to stay safe while enjoying Fawkes at The Walks in King’s Lynn tonight

Crowds are urged to stay safe as they enjoy a popular free fireworks show tonight.

Fawkes in The Walks returns to Lynn Park tonight – when it will be full of stalls and attractions.

The event is likely to be attended by thousands of people from the area and beyond to enjoy an evening of entertainment, but the public is advised to be aware of their surroundings.

Inspector Ben Jarvis of Norfolk Police recommends people arrange a meeting point in case someone gets lost, as well as taking photographs so people can be reunited with the help of officers.

He said: “It’s fantastic to have Fawkes in The Walks in Lynn, where else can you go to enjoy a free fireworks event?

“There are a lot of people who go out, so the really important thing is that everyone behaves well.

“It seems like a really easy question and most people who come here have a great time, but there are also a few who intend to go out and ruin it for everyone else and behave foolishly, which means we have to do it. intervene.

“We are here to support the council and the event to make sure everyone is safe and has a great time.”

At the event, police officers will be around The Walks to ensure everyone is safe and will intervene if there is a public safety issue or if people need to be dealt with for anti-social behaviour.

Inspector Jarvis added: “I think this is a fantastic place for families to come, it’s an open space and the fireworks here are great.

“What I suggest is that if you come with a family or group, bring torches as it will be dark and make sure you know what your party will be like.”

David Copeland, group manager for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service’s Western District, is encouraging people to attend a fireworks display organized as Fawkes in The Walks.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to come and celebrate bonfire night in a very safe and organized way. We believe that this time of year is a peak time for fires, where fireworks and bonfires cause accidental fires on neighboring properties in all of west Norfolk.” said.

Fire and rescue service advice is to attend a professionally led event that has additional measures in place to ensure it takes place safely.

“By coming to an organized event we minimize the risk to the community. Not only is it a safe experience to come and experience the fireworks, but it also reduces the number of bonfires and other displays in Lynn and West Norfolk,” Copeland said.

“This means we don’t spend as many resources on accidental fires, meaning our teams are available to handle more 999 calls that are needed in this time period.”

Meanwhile, Cllr Bal Anota, West Norfolk Council’s cabinet member for events and public open spaces, advises people to wear appropriate footwear as the ground can be wet and muddy and to dress warmly.

People are also asked to park in city car parks and not on residential streets, leaving full access for emergency services.

Cllr Anota said: “Bonfire night is a family favourite, but the best thing about having a well-organised event is that people can enjoy it safely in a controlled environment.

The event has been held for about 16 years and in recent years attendance has doubled to around 18,000 people.

He added: “We understand that not everyone has the disposable income to have fireworks shows at home, so they can come here and enjoy the entertainment before and after the event.”
