Julia Roberts’ period on set terrified a director after her bad experience with Steven Spielberg

Whether it’s pretty woman either runaway bride, the actress has time and time again given us movies that are our comfort films to watch while destroying a pint of ice cream. In addition to his romantic comedies, he has also made films of all genres. It’s simply versatile!

In 1999, Julia Roberts played the role of Anna Scott in Notting Hill, a romantic comedy written by the one and only Richard Curtis. While the movie was as adorable as it sounds, it turns out that Richard Curtis was pretty terrified of the actress on set. Well, does it have something to do with her setting boundaries after a series of bad experiences?

At the beginning of this year, Julia Roberts and Richard Curtis sat down to talk British Vogue. During the discussion, Roberts admitted that things had changed a lot in the last 25 years.

Your statement, “Now we have better and more fun conversations than 25 years ago” led Curtis to remember how he was afraid of her back when they were filming Notting Hill.

He remembered the rule Roberts had made for himself that didn’t allow him to be too friendly on set. Curtis stated:

So I was afraid of you. Do you remember what you told me last week in Notting Hill? You suddenly started coming to the set every day, even when you weren’t filming, and you said you had to be careful with movies, careful not to be too friendly.

Roberts, who did not remember this part of his life, asked: “Because?” to which Curtis responded:

Because you said that someone will always take advantage of it a little. That someone will always suddenly ask you to meet their mother and come to dinner and everything. And you felt like you had to focus on your work.

When he asked her if she still, to this day, felt like she had to hold back because people only saw her as THE Julia Roberts, she responded:

It’s a complicated question, because I feel like sometimes I have to hold back because there are too many question marks about where the space will expand.

Other times, Roberts takes a friendly step, greeting and hugging strangers as warmly as possible. A perfect balance between boundaries and courtesy.

In 1991, Roberts played the role of Tinkerbell in Steven Spielberg‘s Hook. Rumors surfaced that the two personalities clashed on set and that Roberts was even nicknamed “Van” because of his attitude.

When asked about it, she simply said that she had never heard that nickname before. However, he admitted that he had his moments on set, as anyone would if they sat idle in their trailers for hours on end.

she said Entertainment Weekly,

No. I never heard of it. But I’m a normal person. I mean, if I sit in my trailer for six hours doing nothing, I’ll be like, ‘What the fuck is going on?’ I don’t think it’s an outrageous question, nor do I think it’s temperamental.

Despite the rumors, Roberts claimed that she and Spielberg got along well. When EW recalled sources talking about “friction” among them, she responded bravely,

‘A source says…’ If they don’t have enough balls to say who they are, I think they should keep their mouths shut.

Clearly, either the sources were lying or Roberts’s were. However, we can understand that you feel frustrated by having to wait 6 to 8 hours on set doing absolutely nothing when you could have used your time for something better.

Notting Hill is available to rent/purchase on Prime Video.

Hook is available to watch on AMC.
