West Northants must pay £11,000 for teenager’s loss of education

The teenager’s mother informed the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman that her daughter would not be able to attend school from June 2021.

His attendance had already decreased and his anxiety worsened “after the limits imposed by Covid-19.”

In April 2022, it asked the council to complete an EHCP, and the local authority agreed to complete one in June 2022, but did not issue a final plan until June 2023.

The council suggested that she attend a school that turned out to be “inadequate,” the said the Ombudsman in his report, externaland his mother complained to the court about disabilities and special education needs.

The council issued another EHCP in November 2023, naming a new school to start in January 2024.

The Ombudsman said he only investigated matters from April 2022, because that was when the family first approached local authorities.
