New Jersey crews battle 100-acre wildfire in Downe Twp., Cumberland County

DOWNE TWP., New Jersey (WPVI) — Crews in South Jersey are battling a 100-acre wildfire in Downe Twp. Cumberland County.

Authorities said the flames were detected Thursday night in the Railroad Avenue area.

Helicopter 6 flew over the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m. to capture the raging flames.

The fire is 0% contained, but the New Jersey Wildland Fire Service says crews are using a backfire operation to help contain the flames.

No injuries have been reported.

Very dry conditions have sparked several wildfires across the region this week, including in Evesham Twp., Burlington County.

“It makes it difficult because the materials that break down, like the swamps and things that exist in the forest, are dry. A lot of the lakes are drying up,” said Tom Gerber, wildfire section director for the Fire Service. New Jersey Foresters. Service.

Railroad Avenue is closed between Dividendo Creek Road and Ackley Road.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
