Hastings ophthalmologist celebrates 50 years in practice by handing it over to his son – Twin Cities

What do Post-it notes, the comedy “Happy Days” and the Rivertown Eye Center in Hastings have in common? They made their debut in 1974.

The founder of Rivertown Eye CareDr. Joseph Slapnicher, was seeing patients in Hastings when Walter Mondale ran for president, when the Minnesota Twins won their second and third World Series titles and when the Mall of America opened its doors. The only thing left to do now is celebrate a career that builds a legacy.

After 50 years and countless patients, Slapnicher has decided to retire, leaving his practice to his son, Dr. Eric Slapnicher, but not before the 50th anniversary is celebrated and the retirement party begins Friday at noon.

“It has been an incredible journey serving this community for five decades, and I am proud to have created a practice that will continue to provide exceptional care for generations to come,” Slapnicher said in a company news release.

Since its inception, Rivertown has moved within Hastings twice and moved to its current location at 1011 N. Frontage Road in 2006.

Eric Slapnicher joined the team in 2002.

“Following in my father’s footsteps has been both an honor and a responsibility that I take very seriously,” he said in the statement. “Our goal has always been to provide the best possible care to our patients and we are grateful for the trust they have placed in us over the years.”

Rivertown’s optometry team grew in 2007 with the addition of Dr. Dena McGree, a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the Indiana University School of Optometry.

Friday’s ’70s-themed celebration, which is open to all, will feature a DJ, drinks, prizes and giveaways from local community businesses and eyewear brands.

“We are not only celebrating our history; We look forward to serving our community for many years to come,” said Eric Slapnicher.
