Jordan Love among returning starters

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love returned to practice on a rainy Thursday, perhaps a sign that he will be on the field for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Love moved cautiously while reporters were present, although the rain might have had as much to do with it as the groin injury suffered Sunday in Jacksonville.

He moved “like he was limited,” coach Matt LaFleur said, remaining as tight-lipped as possible about his quarterback’s status.

Love was one of seven starters who did not practice Wednesday. On Thursday, four of those players returned with limited participation, but three remained sidelined.

RB Josh Jacobs (ankle) He said missing practice Wednesday was more about “managing my body” than the ankle that took him off the field late in the game. As expected, he practiced on Thursday.

“You never really feel it until after the game,” he said Wednesday. “You feel it in the game, but everything will be fine. Then after the game, when you get on the plane and it’s bloated, you get off and think, ‘Damn, everything calmed down.’ But I’ll be fine.”

LG Elgton Jenkins (gluteus) He usually doesn’t practice on Wednesday but returns on Thursday. That was the case again this week.

LT Rasheed Walker (knee) He also returned to action. Walker and Jenkins are the only players who have played every offensive snap this season.

C Josh Myers (doll) He missed a second consecutive day. While speaking to journalists, he did everything with his right hand.

“We’ll see,” LaFleur said of his status for Sunday. “We’ll give him playing time, but yeah, I’m absolutely concerned about that, because it’s a big part of our ability to go out and operate at a high level on offense.”

CB Jaire Alexander (knee)who limped off the field in the final snap against the Jaguars, did not practice. He has allowed just one catch in each of the last three weeks, according to Pro Football Focus and would be a huge asset against Lions quarterback Jared Goff. who is on a historic good streak.

S Evan Williams (hamstring) He also missed a second straight day. “He felt something before the game,” coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday, and tried to overcome it, but only managed 18 snaps.

All eyes will be on Love this week. After missing Wednesday’s practice, he took limited snaps while reporters were present Thursday.

After a ball security period, the first period of the day has the three quarterbacks working with the four running backs. Love usually goes first (with Josh Jacobs) and last (with practice squad player Ellis Merriweather). On Thursday, Love was first with Jacobs, Malik Willis was second (with Emanuel Wilson), Sean Clifford was third (with Chris Brooks) and Willis was fourth (with Merriweather).

Was it a good sign that Love practiced on a wet and potentially slippery field?

“Yes, we’ll see. He was limited today,” LaFleur said.

After missing two games with a knee injury and missing his return to the lineup against Minnesota, Love has helped the Packers win four straight games.

“It’s definitely frustrating” to get hurt again, he said. “It’s not ideal. You wish you could go through a season and be healthy and recover every week, but things come up. As I say all the time, control what you can control. So I do my best to try to get through the week, do the best I can during treatment and prepare.

“But you definitely have to work on the mental aspect and stay calm, understand that injuries happen, it’s part of the game, but it’s definitely not ideal.”

However, the possible absences of Alexander and Williams could be equally important against the Lions, who are number one in scoring. When Williams exited the game in Jacksonville, the Jaguars’ passing game kicked into high gear.

In Detroit, Goff did not practice Wednesday due to the ankle injury suffered last week, but participated fully Thursday.
