Governor names new Montgomery County district attorney

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (WSFA) – Governor Kay Ivey has appointed a new district attorney for Montgomery County.

Azzie Oliver, who was jury as acting district attorney on October 17, has been officially named the new district attorney of Montgomery County.

Oliver will replace Daryl Bailey, who retired earlier this month.

Before being elevated to DA pro tem, she served as deputy director. She also served as chief of the Criminal Trials Division of the Alabama Attorney General’s office.

“Throughout her time at the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, Azzie developed a reputation for being tough on crime, as well as a strong advocate for victims and making her community a better place to live and work,” said Attorney General Steve Marshall. “No one is more qualified or prepared for this position than Azzie, and I have every confidence that he will do an excellent job as Montgomery County District Attorney.”

Oliver, a graduate of Alabama State University and Jones School of Law, was a domestic violence resource prosecutor in the Alabama Attorney’s Office prior to her four years as attorney general.

He has extensive service with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, dating back to the beginning of his career. The governor’s office says law enforcement officials credit Oliver’s work on domestic violence cases and are confident his experience will benefit Montgomery County.

Ivey notified Oliver of his selection Thursday morning. His appointment is effective immediately.
