Delta’s popular seat back map is getting an update — here’s why

A popular onboard activity is becoming more accessible.

Delta Air Lines recently announced that its inflight map would soon have new features to make it more accessible for passengers with low vision.

The newest version of the map will feature a special accessibility mode that has high-contrast colors, such as a black, white and gray option, making it easier to track the progress of a flight, the airline shared in a mail. The main version of the map will continue to be the traditional satellite.

The accessible option will also include larger text and buttons, have additional zoom controls, and support colorblind people. Delta says it plans to launch a voice narration feature that would use artificial intelligence.

“We are proud to be the first airline to launch this technology, setting the standard for inclusive travel experiences across the industry,” said Ekrem Dimbiloglu, Delta general manager of customer experience – inflight entertainment, Delta Studio and Wi-Fi. , in the mail.

In preparation for the launch of the new accessibility features, Delta invited members of the airline’s Disability Advisory Council, as well as Guiding Eyes for the Blind, to demonstrate and evaluate the new features.

The onboard map has become a popular standalone entertainment option for passengers. Delta shares that 45 percent of passengers interact with the map each month and that 20 percent of those customers look at the map exclusively throughout the flight. The map has multiple display options, where users can see the remaining flight duration, where the aircraft is currently flying, and even a virtual view of what is happening from the flight deck window.

The airline’s onboard system, called Delta Studio, provides entertainment to more than 165,000 seatback screens that passengers can view. This includes over 300 movies, TV shows, and more.

Airlines have been increasing accessibility options for passengers. For example, United Airlines recently changed its reservation policy to reduce additional charges for passengers with wheelchairs.
