New Jersey man convicted of stealing $570K in COVID unemployment benefits

A 37-year-old Bergen County man is the latest of three people convicted in a scheme in which the trio stole more than $570,000 in COVID unemployment benefits.

After a five-day trial, a federal jury in Trenton found Jose Tavares, of Englewood, guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, the New Jersey U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Tavares and two other people used the victims’ names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers to create online profiles and apply for unemployment insurance benefits from July 2020 to February 2021, prosecutors said.

The New York Department of Labor approved the applications and the trio received debit cards which they used to make ATM withdrawals in New Jersey and New York. They also spent the illegally obtained money on vacations, luxury retail purchases and cosmetic surgery, officials said.

Yanira Abreu, 43, of the Keasbey section of Woodbridge, and Christopher Valerio, 34, of Perth Amboy, previously pleaded guilty.

The three communicated using WhatsApp, an encrypted voice and text messaging application, according to court documents. The documents did not explain how they obtained the victims’ Social Security numbers or dates of birth.

Abreu was sentenced to two years in prison in May, while Valerio received a sentence of two years and six months in April.

Tavares is scheduled to be sentenced on March 4.

All three were arrested and charged in December 2021.
