What would you do if your crush turned into a chicken nugget? That’s the question Baek-joong faces when Min-ah, his boss’s daughter and crush, enters a machine that mysteriously arrives at his office door and transforms into a chicken nugget. Based on the manhwa by Park Jidok. chicken nuggetThe series follows Baek-joong and his boss, Seon-man, as they are dragged through a crazy adventure that includes mad scientists, purple aliens, a subplot that goes back two hundred years, a strange nugget restaurant chicken and, surprisingly, a parody of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar as he tries to turn Min-ah back into a human.

If the premise sounds absurd, we can assure you that the actual show is even more so. The show’s humor, which constantly indulges in dad jokes and comedy, is downright horrendous. However, chicken nugget he’s refreshingly aware of his unfunny humor and doesn’t shy away from it. He continues to play with those bad jokes until the audience begins to find the situation ridiculous, thus ending up perfectly executing the “so bad it’s good” aesthetic.

The plot of the show is generally stupid. Sometimes it even seems like the writers are just throwing random elements and plot points at the wall to see what sticks. The surprising part is that all of this somehow works in the show’s favor since, more often than not, these completely random things end up sticking together and help reinforce the nonsensical web that the show ends up weaving the audience into.

The highlight of the series is the few moments of tenderness found throughout the show. In Baek-joong’s backstory of having to give up his dreams of singing to become an engineer at his father’s insistence and in Seon-man’s painful frenzy to get his daughter back, we see the intensity of the story and the depth of the characters. With their tremendous emotional range and their ability to truly immerse themselves in the absurdity of their fictional situations, the actors are undoubtedly incredible in their respective roles. chicken nugget Sometimes it draws you in unexpectedly because of how seriously it takes the characters’ emotions. But these moments feel even more poignant because, following them, we are immediately swept back into the strange world without pause or precursors.

The series was clearly made on a limited budget, very visible through its terrible CGI. However, that took nothing away from our overall enjoyment of the show and, in some ways, might have even aggravated it by adding an air of wholesomeness to the whole thing. The only aspect of chicken nugget What was somewhat annoying was its pacing. Sometimes the story drags on too long or the comedic elements become a bit repetitive due to the limited number of situations the characters can be present in. Instead of a ten-episode miniseries, the show could have been condensed into a two-hour movie without losing any of its essentiality or value. However, that’s perhaps just a small bone to pick considering the sheer amount of fun we’d otherwise get from the show.

The show is incredibly weird, unabashedly so, but not in the absurd A24 sense. It’s indulgent in its ridiculousness, but never too indulgent. He is careful to never take the show itself seriously and doesn’t even try to be artistic. At a time when every piece of content we consume seems to be either emotionally charged or high-strung, it was very relaxing to see something so absolutely absurd and strange. Looking chicken nugget Honestly, it was the most fun we’ve had with a TV show in a long time.

The writers had a great weekend watching this wonderful show.
