Laurel Student Council Holds Balloon Release for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) – On Wednesday, the Laurel High School Student Council took the time to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The council held its annual balloon release to honor survivors and remember the victims.

Students and leaders gathered on the front lawn of the high school for the occasion.

Those gathered wrote a name or note on the balloon to a lost victim of domestic violence before releasing it into the air.

“This balloon release really opened our eyes to a lot of things that have been happening in our society today,” said LHS senior and student council member D’Antony Nicholson.

“It shows us that it’s more about what we see with the human eye. “It’s deeper than anything (in) life, period.”

The council also partnered with the Laurel Police Department and the Domestic Violence Victims Advocate to provide resources and information to students on the topic.

“We are just here to show our support for those who have gone through what they have lost their lives and those who may not have a voice right now, but we are here to let them know that we can be a voice for them,” said Tamia Taylor, student council advisor.

In addition to the balloon release, the student council delivered a donation of laundry detergent to the Missing Peace Ministry.
