South Bend Common Council seeks to annex part of county

STREET. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. — City leaders are seeking to annex a portion of St. Joseph County, providing space in the city for HRP Construction; The land will house space for an office and equipment storage.

The property will have access to the city’s police and fire departments and will connect its own water and sewer lines to the city’s.

Canneth Lee, representing the First District of South Bend. explains how moves like this not only attract businesses to the area but also give them a reason to stay.

“I think having that open countryside and having the resources and being able to connect to what the city provides to that area. I think it’s an incentive for businesses to come and build in that area and continue to strengthen South Bend and make South Bend one of the best places,” Lee said.

Both the resolution to annex the property and the amended ordinance were passed from the committee as a whole to the South Bend Common Council for consideration.

If the Council passes the resolution adopting the Cleveland Poppy Annexation area, they will have to approve the amended zoning ordinance to include the city’s newly adopted portion.

The bill will go to the full Council on November 13.
