Phoenix approves changing speed limits in these 20 locations

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — You’ll soon have to let off the gas a little in certain areas of Phoenix.

The Phoenix City Council unanimously approved changing the speed limit in 20 locations across the city.

This includes major intersections like 52nd Street between Cactus and Thunderbird in north Phoenix, where the speed limit will drop from 35 mph to 30 mph.

On the west side of the city, on 55th Avenue between McDowell and Camelback streets, the speed limit will go from 30 to 25 mph.

A complete list is at the end of the article.

Seventeen of the speed limit changes were due to road and traffic conditions, officials said. The other three changes are new speed limits for new and annexed roads.

The city says all speed limit changes were recommended based on a traffic study and approved by a traffic engineer.

Officials say they will first add temporary signs, informing drivers of upcoming speed limit changes.

They should post official speed limit signs sometime in the next few months.

The vote takes place a week later Phoenix City Council voted to install red light cameras back to its most dangerous intersections. One council member voted against the proposal..
