Surging Jaguars LB gives insight into Week 9

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Ventrell Miller spoke to the media on Wednesday and we were there for it all.

To watch their interview, see above.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson spoke Monday. Below is a transcript.

Q: About an update on WR Christian Kirk’s injury?

Pederson: “He had surgery this morning, so it’s over. Yes, unfortunate. Trying to delay the game. He landed on it. The linebacker fell on him. Yes. Difficult. Hard for him. It’s difficult for us, but he will get through it and be better.”

Q: About an update on WR Brian Thomas Jr.’s injury?

Pederson: “He only has a small bruise on the left side of his chest. It’s going to hurt. “It’s kind of a day-to-day thing.”

Q: Is Thomas Jr. expected to be available for Week 9 against Philadelphia?

Pederson: “Yeah, I think it’s more about how much you can tolerate.”

Q: Any other injury updates?

Pederson: “Gabe (WR Gabe Davis) should be fine. Again, it was just the shoulder. He just lost some feeling there and we were expecting that to come back a little bit during the game. Sometimes those are funny things, but they should be fine. Ezra (OL Ezra Cleveland), ankle. As of today, he’ll probably be day-to-day until the weekend. Scherff (OL Brandon Scherff) returned. Scherff is going to be sore. Tough guy. Fought. He came back, finished the game. Should be fine by this weekend. Darby (CB Ronald Darby) will be more day-to-day.”

Q: About the addition of WR Parker Washington to your position?

Pederson: “Yeah, I mean, he did great things yesterday. He is a player who has shown that he can do it. So we have a lot of confidence going forward that he can fill that role, fill that spot.”

Q: About OL Cooper Hodges’ performance on Sunday against Green Bay?

Pederson: “Yeah, I mean, tough. He plays right guard, then he has to go in at tight end for PAT, field goal, then he has to go in at left guard. It was everywhere. It wasn’t perfect, but if you have to go through this week with a week of preparation, a week of practice, doing all the reps, all that type of stuff, you’ll be a lot better off. “It was good for him to play to get a little feel for the speed of the game and he did some good things, but I think a week of work, if that’s the case, will do him some good.”

Q: About QB Trevor Lawrence adapting to the game and the offense’s slower start?

Pederson: “Yes, it’s difficult. I mean, God, I mean you looked at it yesterday. He got off to a good start, first down, what, a six- to seven-yard completion on first down to Tank (RB Tank Bigsby)? And then two incompletes. I mean those are things we have to continue to look at. It’s just that part of the execution, right? As coaches making the decisions and the type of decisions we’re making, just look at it and make sure we’re doing the right thing in that regard. But again, it took us until the second quarter against New England to get going, and it took us about the 14th play of this game to get going. So that’s something we have to consider and really emphasize starting how we finish. “That would be ideal as we move forward.”

Q: Were you pleased with the way the team recovered from a 10-point deficit?

Pederson: “Yes, I am. I am very happy with how we responded. You don’t want to lose 10 points, but there are two weeks in a row where we have lost 10 points, but we have responded. The fact that we did what we did at the end to tie the football game is pretty remarkable considering the number of injuries we had at the end of the game. I think Trevor (QB Trevor Lawrence) did a great job leading the team. The guys around him, Parker, Tim (WR Tim Jones), Evan (TE Evan Engram), Brenton (TE Brenton Strange), I mean, they made plays for him too. The offensive line did some good things. So that part was good and now, somehow, we have to make that translate to the first play of the game and then continue from there.”

Q: About the defense problems?

Pederson: “It’s something that when we look at the tape, we look at the staff, you try to point it out. Is it the scheme? Is it the execution on the part of the players? I’d say it’s a little bit of both right now. Look, the bottom line is that sometimes, and I’m not saying this is the case, but you don’t want to do too much in the field, right? You don’t want to take things into your own hands and think that someone else has to do it; we simply ask that you do your job. The coaches train, the players play, all that. But do your job and we’ll be fine. When you see the good there, that’s what’s happening. The 11 play as one. But sometimes, every once in a while, you come across a guy who’s maybe out of his or her gap or doing something a little different or forgetting a task or something, and that hurts us. Those are the things we’re trying to clean up right now and just make sure we continue to train. Train the details, train the finer points and try to eliminate some of that.”

Q: About your level of concern about pass rush?

Pederson: “Yeah, I mean, obviously you want to affect the quarterback, and every week you go in thinking you can do it. Listen, we need to take a look at it. I think we still have the right guys there. Whether we move them more or put five-man pressures, six-man pressures, whatever we have to do to affect the passer, we have to be able to do it. I know Ryan (defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen) is taking a hard look at that and is very proud of it. It is an area that we have to improve.”

Q: On whether you will take a more active role in defensive game planning) “No. Listen, I’ll leave it to the experts over there. I’m an offensive guy. I’m going to continue on the offensive. I’m going to help in any way I can. I can help with personnel and different decisions that way, but as far as the plan and all that, I mean, that’s what they get paid for and let them do their job.”

Q: About the personnel change on offense?

Pederson: “Well, I mean, I think it changes just because of the nature of the people that are on the field. But yeah, I mean, missing Christian (WR Christian Kirk) is going to hurt a little bit. Obviously his leadership and the way he’s been playing, but we’ll see this week where BT is and we know: you’re really just asking Parker to take Christian’s place, and we feel very comfortable there. So, I don’t think there’s going to be a huge amount of change schematically. We just have to put our players in the best situations, that is, take advantage of their strengths and use them in the game plan.”
