Man accused of shooting at Tempe Democratic campaign office charged with terrorism

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — The suspect accused of shooting multiple times at an East Valley Democratic office has been indicted by a grand jury on charges including terrorism, the Maricopa County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.

County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said Jeffrey Michael Kelly was charged in connection with three separate shootings at the Democratic National Committee office near South Avenue and Priest Drive in Tempe.

Kelly faces one count of terrorism, three counts of discharging a firearm at a structure, three counts of unlawfully discharging a firearm and one count of criminal damage.

Tempe police say Kelly fired shots into the building between September 16 and October 6. Authorities say he first used a CO2 weapon and then firearms. Over the course of the three shootings, Kelly allegedly fired more than twenty shots, causing damage to the building’s windows, front doors, and walls.

Court documents revealed that dozens of weapons, thousands of rounds of ammunition and a grenade launcher were It was reportedly recovered from Kelly’s home. Authorities found 120 weapons, including AR-style rifles, 250,000 rounds of ammunition, silencers, rifle scopes, body armor and fake grenades.

Additionally, Kelly is also accused of attach white powder bags and placing razor blades on “anti-democratic ideology signs” in several locations near his home in Ahwatukee. The posters were full of messages saying: “Fuck you!”, “play stupid games and win stupid prizes!” and “guess the poison!”

There have been no charges for crimes related to the signs.

Kelly is being held on two $500,000 cash-only bonds.
