Matlock is back in a brand new show, but it wouldn’t be the big hit without the indomitable Kathy Bates at the helm.

As reported by Monsters and CriticsMatlock is such a success that it is renewed for season 2, and Kathy has a lot to do with its success.

One of Matlock’s premises is that older women are invisible, which is precisely how Kathy’s character, Madeline Matlock, performs so well as a lawyer on the show.

In an interview with news week, Kathy shared that she identifies with her character in many ways and describes how they fit together: “A lot of the things that Matty goes through, that I’ve gone through, or that I’m thinking about, have been absolutely incredible.”

Playing an older lawyer may seem easy for Kathy, as she’s great in everything from Molly Brown in Titanic to Annie Wilkes in Misery, but she’s described it differently.

Kathy has shared that she has been “terrified” and “scared” to play Madeline Matlock, but she does something before taking on the role that helps her prepare.

Kathy fights her terror by reciting a specific quote.

Kathy has openly expressed that she is terrified of playing Madeline Matlock. She said: “I was absolutely terrified,” as she described seeing his face on billboards everywhere.

The show’s quick renewal was equally discouraging for Kathy, who was ready to retire before this role came into her hands.

Kathy told the outlet: “It was a little scary, you know? It’s like, wow, we’re going up so high, we’re going up so fast, what’s going to happen?” The fear of failure after becoming so popular so quickly scared Kathy.

Kathy has a trick that helps calm her terror before playing Madeline Matlock, and she shared it with Stephen Colbert on his latest show.

Kathy is a big fan of Dune, a book by Frank Herbert that has been made into several movies. One of the quotes inspired Kathy so much that she printed it out and kept it in a folder. She puts this in front of every script and reads it before performing each day.

The quote begins: “Fear kills the mind. Fear is the small death that brings total destruction. I will face my fear. I will allow it to pass over me and through me.” In the film Kathy refers to, the character who recites it is a faceless Bene Gesserit, somewhat nun-like.

Kathy said it resonated with her. since her character in Matlock is an invisible older woman. The quote helps her overcome her fears of playing the role.

The next episode of Matlock looks as good as the first three

The next episode of Matlock is titled The Rabbit and the Falcon, and the name could come from an old folk tale.

The Rabbit and the Hawk comes from an old American folktale in which a rabbit gets caught in the talons of a hawk and has to find a way out.

The rabbit tells the hawk that if he lets him go, he will eat a lot of food and get fat. When the hawk starts dreaming about a giant, fat rabbit for food, he forgets to hold it tight and the rabbit runs away to freedom.

If the title of the next episode of Matlock follows the folktale, it will be interesting to see who the rabbit and the falcon are in the story.

Matlock is transmitted CBS Thursdays at 10/9c.
