Bucs’ Chris Godwin continues charity work after injury

It’s a moment that’s gone Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fans and Chris Godwin were stunned and saddened.

“That’s the hardest thing in periods like this, when you’re injured. You can’t move. You can’t do what you love,” Godwin said.

While Godwin would love to stay on the field during the BucsAn ankle dislocation suffered against the Ravens in Week 7 has brought to a premature end what was a promising season for the Bucs receiver.

“It’s hard to know how I’ll feel because right now I have a big splint and three extra pounds,” she said.

Meanwhile, the extra weight on his ankle is nothing compared to the weight on Godwin’s shoulders as he heads into a lengthy rehab process for the second time in three seasons.

“Obviously, I’ve been through the rehab process before, but you never want to go through something like that again,” Godwin said. “But that’s where we were, so we get back to work.”

Chris Godwin talks about injuries at the Team Godwin Foundation benefit gala.

That mentality is what Godwin has had all along, as Godwin could be seen telling his coach to “get back to work” while he was still being carted off the field immediately after his injury.

“I guess that’s what I am,” Godwin said. “That’s where it occurred to me. All I can do is control what I can control, and that’s get back to work.”

While Godwin’s work on the field for the Bucs this season is over, his work in the community continues. Just days after surgery to repair his ankle, Godwin made sure he could host the Team Godwin Foundation’s annual benefit gala.

That foundation, however, had already received more than $15,000 in donations shortly after his injury as fans attempted to show their support for the Bucs catcher.

“Honestly, it really touched my heart,” Godwin said. “That was what lifted me up the most, just the outpouring of love.”

It’s that outpouring of love that has given Godwin all the motivation he needs as he begins his rehabilitation process.

“Obviously, sports are special and we often see a lot of moments where things like this happen, and that shows how important they are,” Godwin said.
