Joe Ladapo Backs Local Growing in Fight Against Broader Recreational Marijuana Initiative

Florida’s Surgeon General appears to be arguing that people with green thumbs should have the right to expand their horticultural horizons.

During the elliptical comments denouncing Amendment 3, the Personal use of marijuana by adults question on the ballot this fall, Jose Ladapo gave the green light to cultivation and use.

“It is not a legalization of marijuana. Actually that’s not what it is. It’s a bad relationship,” Ladapo said to describe his structure of the agreement that would establish the amendment, before discussing marijuana legalization more generally.

“I don’t love drugs, but I think it’s okay that people, you know, want to grow marijuana in their garden, want to have parties, hang out with their friends, God bless them. I want you to do it with your eyes open and know that it is not something you can do for free because it kills brain cells. It has other effects on health. But, you know, most people are on the same page about it.”

The amendment would legalize the possession and purchase of recreational marijuana at points of sale and requires 60% support to pass. In additional comments Wednesday in Orlando, Ladapo described Amendment 3 as “absurd,” “preposterous,” “disgusting” and “disgusting.”

The amendment, which was shaped by restrictions against overbroad citizen initiatives, does not address domestic cultivation, which has never been seriously considered by the Legislature.

Trulieve CEO Kim riverswhose company has been the main supporter of the amendment initiative, has said that his company has supported local cultivation in other markets and would support the expansion of that model in Florida if voters approve recreational use. But that would likely require approval from lawmakers.
