Boston Traffic: Most Dangerous Intersections

Boston intersections with at least 10 crashes from 2015 to May 2024.Scooty Nickerson/Globe Staff

I love how walkable Boston is. But in the short time I’ve been in the city so far, I’ve had more than a few close encounters with cars as a pedestrian. If you walk, bike, or primarily T-ride like me, you may have had similar experiences.

But of course, not all intersections are the same. Transportation reporter Shannon Larson and Scooty Nickerson of the data team joined forces to examine city data on traffic incidents to see which crossroads are the worst.

This is the same data, as Scooty previously learned, that the city used to determine where install more than 500 speed bumps.

So what did Shannon and Scooty find?

“While I wasn’t necessarily surprised, what surprised me most was our discovery that dozens of Boston’s most dangerous intersections are in areas that faced years of underinvestment stemming from discriminatory practices,” Shannon said.

The overall finding was that many of the worst intersections were not designed for the pedestrians who live and walk there, but for the cars that pass through them. Many were optimized to encourage higher speeds, experts told reporters.

In fact, Boston has had an average of about 1,900 serious or fatal crashes each year since 2015. So far this year, there have been 137 crashes involving pedestrians and eight fatalities, all but one at an intersection.

The main intersection with the most accidents is the infamous “Mass. and Cass” – Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, an area often associated with homeless encampments and open-air drug use. But that’s another story.

What we also know is that it is a huge and extensive intersection where many roads meet. Not to mention, there is usually a constant flow of traffic coming in and out of Boston Medical Center in that area. The data showed that 49 of the 124 accidents recorded there since 2015 involved pedestrians.

Want to know if you live near one of these intersections? (Unfortunately, I do.) Take a look at the interactive map and graph in history.

ELECTORAL PERSPECTIVES | 6 days until the presidential elections

News from here and there in the electoral campaign:

The consequences of Puerto Rico: After a comedian at a Donald Trump rally in New York described Puerto Rico as “garbage,” Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Yesterday, as the controversy continued and the Trump campaign distanced itself from it, the musician released this video Celebrating the Puerto Rican people and culture. The title? “Trash.”

Endorsements: Gannett-owned USA Today is the latest major news outlet to say will not endorse a presidential candidate.

Tickets: Two urns were placed in Washington state and Oregon. damaged by fire. Investigators are still searching for the culprits, but evidence so far suggests the incidents were related. Ballot boxes in Portland, Oregon, were protected by a fire suppression system, keeping most of the ballots intact. But hundreds of ballots were destroyed in the fire in Vancouver, Washington.

The polls have been the target of conspiracy theorists who say they are too susceptible to voter fraud, the Associated Press reported. As these incidents demonstrate, tensions are rising across the country as Election Day approaches.

The surveys: In Boston, the Globe’s multimedia team gathered a tracker that follows major national polls who seek to predict the winner in the presidential elections. Of course, polls are imperfect, but they can be useful tools for gauging voter sentiment.

So where are things in the presidential race?

Neither candidate has a clear lead as I write this Tuesday afternoon. The averages show Harris with a slight lead, but I hesitate to even write that, because this could change by the time you read on Wednesday morning.

Elsewhere in politics:

Former Donald Trump adviser and podcast host Steve Bannon has been released from federal prison. Bannon served four months in prison after being found guilty of contempt of Congress. He will reportedly return to his podcast. (CNN)

More than 200,000 subscribers left the Washington Post after the newspaper’s billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos, blocked an endorsement from a presidential candidate. Several staff members have resigned. The cancellations represent about 8 percent of the paper’s paid circulation of about 2.5 million subscribers. (NPR)

I’m a big fan of Halloween decorations, even if I never get around to making them myself. I’ve been wandering around town looking for the best decorations and I think I found my favorites in the South End. There are definitely other neighborhoods bringing their Halloween A-game, but the South End had the largest group of fabulous displays. This particular one was definitely among the best.

Did I mention Halloween is my favorite? The photo shows one of the facilities in Boston’s Wicked Haunt Festwhich features four different haunted houses. You can get a pass that will allow you to visit just one of them, or a more expensive pass that will allow you to visit as many as you want. It definitely had a festive atmosphere, with games, drinking and food! (Pro tip: get the pretzel, skip the fried dough.)
