Scarborough ends Deering’s hopes of repeating regional title

SCARBOROUGH – For the first 36 minutes of Tuesday night’s Class A South boys soccer quarterfinals against defending regional champion Deering, the Scarborough Red Storm were hot on their heels.

Then, in the blink of an eye, the Red Storm showed how dangerous they can be.

Denver Bachman assisted on Matthew Booth’s goal just before halftime, then fed Finn Coburn for a second goal and third-seeded Scarborough earned a 2-0 victory.

The Red Storm (13-1-1) will go to No. 2 Falmouth or host No. 7 Biddeford in the semifinals.

“We just want to wait for opportunities,” said Mark Diaz, Scarborough’s longtime coach. “I like the way we defended and were pretty patient tonight.”

Sixth-seeded Deering (8-7-1) spent much of the first half in the Scarborough box and earned eight corner kicks, but the Rams didn’t really create much of a chance in the process.

“That’s been our story,” Deering coach Joel Costigan said. “Scoring continued to be a drought for us.”

With 3:07 left in the first half, Khalil Ghosheh delivered a perfect cross to Bachman, who beat a defender and sent the ball into the frame. It could have gone in on its own, but Booth got to the ball before it reached the line and put it in the net for a 1-0 lead and a huge shift in momentum.

“I really have to give all the credit to the defense,” Bachman said. “Khalil crossed him, I spun my guy around and put him in a dangerous area, and Booth was there. I’m glad it was there. Going into the half with the lead was huge.”

With 23:20 left in regulation, the Red Storm had a break. Bachman served on a free kick from 40 yards, and Coburn ran up to him and fired past Deering goalkeeper Jack Borland (a save).

“I saw the goalkeeper get scared and (Denver) played a beautiful ball in the 6-yard box, and I put the ball over the goalkeeper,” Coburn said. “It worked out pretty well.”

Deering had a great chance to respond with 14 minutes remaining, but Cristiano Afonso’s header from Ethan Fisher’s cross was denied by Scarborough goalkeeper Seamus Corry (six saves).

“I’m very proud of our effort all season,” Costigan said. “There have been ups and downs. “We want the guys to keep their heads up and we hope the freshmen come back next year and stay focused from the start and make sure we leave everything on the field.”
