Sarasota County crews continue debris removal

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Officials with the Sarasota County Solid Waste Authority say they hope to clean up most of the debris left after Hurricane Milton in the next 90 days.

Officials say they have had crews working 24 hours a day, seven days a week since the storm made landfall earlier this month.

The county said that as of Oct. 28, more than 386,000 cubic yards of material had been collected from unincorporated Sarasota County, enough to fill 106 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

They are also using areas like Rothenbach Park, as well as land at the corner of Stickney Point Road and US 41 as a temporary drop-off and sorting location for tons of material that was destroyed during the storm surge.

“We have seven management sites that the county is using to consolidate materials and we have a faster turnaround time,” said Wendi Crisp of the Sarasota County Solid Waste Authority.
