Testimony concludes in federal retrial of former LMPD Detective Brett Hankison

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – When was Breonna Taylor shot and killed during the raid that ended with her death? That question could be key in Brett Hankison’s new civil trial.

Hankison spent hours on the stand Tuesday answering questions from federal prosecutors. It was his second day on the stand.

Hankison is accused of violating the civil rights of Taylor and her neighbors when he shot through the covered windows of their apartment after one of his associates was shot.

Prosecutors called Detective Mike Nobles, who said he heard a blood-curdling scream after the shooting ended. He told the grand jury that he looked like a woman.

But he also said Tuesday under question from a defense attorney that he could have been a panicked man.

The judge read a fact to the jury saying that four other officers at the scene, including Hankison, did not hear any screams.

This final testimony followed hours of testimony from Hankison, who stood by his actions. He said he believed his fellow officers would have been executed that night and that if he had not shot through the windows, five of his colleagues would have died.

The government repeatedly asked him how his decisions matched his training. But Hankison said his training could not have prepared him for this and called certain training practices guidelines only.

Closing arguments begin Wednesday morning. After that, the case will be in the hands of the jury.
