FC Cincinnati defeats NYCFC in first game of MLS Cup playoffs

First game for FC Cincinnati.

FC Cincinnati opened its 2024 MLS Cup playoff run on Monday with a 1-0 victory against New York City FC at TQL Stadium before a crowd of 21,413. Yamil Asad’s first postseason goal in the 51st minute proved decisive as FCC won the first game of the best-of-three series.

The series continues Saturday with a NYCFC home game at the New York Mets’ Citi Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 pm. A victory in regulation time or a penalty shootout will allow FC Cincinnati to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

FC Cincinnati was threatening on offense throughout Monday’s game en route to eventually outshooting NYCFC, 21-3. FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano stopped the only shot on goal he faced from NYCFC, and the defense in front of him played as well as it had all season.

“Really pleased with the effort tonight in every way,” FC Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan said afterward. “I thought the defensive pressure improved a lot since our last game against (NYCFC)… The central defenders were outstanding, but I also think the guys in front of our defensive line did a very good job of putting pressure back, they created some Really good looks, even more so in the second half, but the first 45, it seemed like a playoff game in that both teams defended well, they were organized, they were difficult to play and then, you know, we saw the moment in the second half. and I thought we handled the game well.

“One more step down the road, but we know it’s not getting any easier, so we’ve got to be ready to turn it around and take the positives from this and be ready for an even better version of (NYCFC).”

Asad’s tally was the result of a centered pass that Luciano Acosta crossed the goalmouth while claiming his sixth postseason goal contribution as an FC Cincinnati player. Asad nodded in on an aerial pass from Acosta, putting the ball into the net to give Cincinnati the eventual game-winning goal.

For Acosta, the assist made him the seventh active MLS player to record at least three goals and assists in the league’s postseason.

“It’s not easy to spike a ball like that,” Noonan said, “and be able to keep it under the bar. (Yamil) has a feel for the game.”

Cincinnati missed opportunities later to ice the game. Without an aggregate scoring rule in place for the current MLS Cup playoff format, more goals wouldn’t have impacted the rest of the series, but they might have made it easier to close out Monday’s victory.

Luca Orellano, who played for the second consecutive game as a striker and scored five of FCC’s 22 shots, hit the post in the 62nd minute. In the final seconds, Nicholas Gioacchini missed a breakaway opportunity in the 95th minute when he shot wide while the NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese ran off his line to apply pressure.

Even without a second score on 22 shots, Cincinnati was still able to close out the victory. That also became easier in the final moments when NYCFC received a straight red card.

In added time of the second half, Tayvon Gray and Acosta competed for the ball near midfield. When the match ended, Acosta kept his face on the ground and Gray was standing with the ball, but the game was declared dead and Gray received a red card for serious foul play.

A subsequent video assistant referee (VAR) check confirmed the red card. Gray will be suspended for the second game of the series.

Planning for Gray’s absence will come later. If only for one night, FC Cincinnati intended to enjoy its victory, which was its first at TQL Stadium since August 31.

“It was an incredible performance by the team and we are proud of what we did,” said Chidozie Awaziem. “I mean, it wasn’t easy. We expected this kind of game and, yeah, I’m glad we got our first win and thanks to the fans who came out to support us. We felt that energy and that kept us going.” come on.”

FC Cincinnati is first on the scoreboard in the best-of-three series in the 51st minute. Luciano Acosta hit a ball into the goal. Yamil Asad headed the ball in, and Acosta had already provided all the necessary power, and the header chance hit the back of the net.

The stage is set. A draw is not possible tonight. Either FC Cincinnati or NYCFC will take a 1-0 lead in this best-of-three series.
