Marquette County residents urged to help with future climate action plan

MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) – Two organizations need the help of Marquette County residents to plan the next steps of a climate action plan.

He Higher Watershed Association (SWP) and the Marquette County Climate Adaptation Task Force They are working on a climate action plan. Before the final plan is put together, Marquette County residents are asked to take a brief online survey to help them understand what is important to community members and where progress needs to be made.

The Marquette County Board of Commissioners passed a climate resolution in March 2023. The resolution recognized the community impacts of climate change. It includes commitments such as eliminating greenhouse gas emissions at county-operated facilities by 2050 and creating a climate action plan to achieve it.

Kathleen Henry PST Special projects coordinator and education specialist, she says it is important to understand how to preserve, conserve and respect our natural spaces, especially in places that depend so much on these resources.

“Here in Marquette County and the Upper Peninsula we are incredibly fortunate and grateful to live in such a beautiful place. One that really depends on Lake Superior and our natural features,” Henry said. “(They) are our lifeblood and the basis of our economy and our life and health in general.”
