MTA Gets Social Media Platforms to Remove Subway Navigation Videos

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The MTA has asked several social media platforms to remove dangerous subway surfing videos, and many have complied, officials said Tuesday.

“We’re always checking every day to make sure they’re removed,” said MTA CEO Janno Lieber.

Recently, two teenagers died surfing the New York City subway, including a 13 year old boyAdolfo Sanabria Sorzano, who was doing a TikTok challenge, according to police and the boy’s mother.

Milene Sorzano told PIX11 News he found videos of his son surfing in the subway on his phone and on social media despite warning him not to travel on trains.

“My son Adolfo Sanabria Sorzano, just 13 years old, tragically lost his life while doing this horrible TikTok challenge navigating the New York City subway,” Sorzano wrote on a GoFundMe page raising money for Adolfo’s funeral expenses.

A 12-year-old girl was seriously injured Sunday while riding the subway above the No. 7 train in Queens with her friend, 13-year-old Krystel Romero, who died, police said.

An 11-year-old boy was also killed while surfing in the subway in Brooklyn last month, sources told PIX11 News.

“The MTA has done a lot to stop this terrible and dangerous trend,” Lieber said. “It breaks the hearts of New Yorkers.”

The MTA has spent thousands of hours promoting anti-surfing messages on subways and launched the “Subway Surfing Kills – Ride Inside, Stay Alive” campaign last year.

But that hasn’t stopped the increase in deaths. At least six people have died riding trains this year, an increase from 2023, according to NYPD data.

“The MTA will continue to push,” Lieber said.
