Rocky Mount man arrested after Sunday shooting

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina man is behind bars after a shooting Sunday.

The Rocky Mount Police Department says they were called to Nash UNC Health Care around 3:20 a.m. after a shooting left someone injured.

When they got there, police discovered the shooting had occurred on Starling Way in Rocky Mount.

Police say the victim, 29-year-old Malik Dickens, was shot in the upper thighs and groin.

Dickens was taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment.

After continuing the investigation, police today identified Darrian Jenkins-Gupton of Rocky Mount as the suspect.

Police say the investigation showed the two men were having an ongoing argument.

Jenkins-Gupton, 30, was charged with:

  • Attempted murder
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflict serious injury.
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Discharging a firearm in city limits.

Jenkins-Gupton is in the Nash County Jail without bond.

Police say Dickens is expected to survive.
