Teen turns himself in after SS United States breaks into and damages Philly docks: sources

A 17-year-old boy is facing several charges in connection with a burglary aboard a historic ship docked in the Port of Philadelphia, according to police sources.

Earlier this month, several tools and batteries were stolen from the SS United States.

According to investigators, the burglary caused damage to the home.

Police sources tell FOX 29’s Steve Keeley that a 17-year-old boy turned himself in to police this week and is charged with burglary and trespassing.

MORE SHORT LINES:

The SS United States recently made headlines when officials finally reached a deal that would turn the ship into the world’s largest artificial reef.

The $10 million deal will see the 1,000-foot ocean liner towed from Philadelphia to Destin-Fort Walton Beach, where it will be sunk offshore.

The former Cold War weapon would then be converted into a diving destination.

Okaloosa County has also pledged to open a “land-based museum and immersive experience” established by the SS United States Conservancy.

The ship still holds the transatlantic speed record it set more than seventy years ago.
