New York traffic deaths hit new record in 2024: report

A new report from Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets reveals that New York City has experienced a record number of traffic deaths and serious injuries in 2024, prompting urgent calls for action from safety advocates. security.

Between January and September 2024, traffic accidents in the city killed 193 people and seriously injured 2,338 others. According to the report, these figures represent more fatalities so far this year than in eight of the last 10 years.

The report also found that each week in New York City, an average of 17 pedestrians lose limbs, organs or suffer injuries with life-altering consequences.

“It ranges from things like losing the ability of a limb to losing a fetus,” explained Alexa Sledge, Director of Communications for Transportation Alternatives. “Seriously life-changing things happen to thousands of people every day.”

In response to the report, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) stated that traffic deaths are trending downward.

“NYC DOT is developing new strategies through engineering, education and law enforcement to address a concerning increase in deaths since the pandemic. Through measures such as expanded automated enforcement, new and improved street designs to pedestrians and cyclists, and new educational campaigns on the rapid growth in the use of electric mobility,” the statement reads.
