Man accused of head-butting Somerset Co. sheriff and deputies after drug conviction

Somerset County authorities say a local drug dealer faces additional charges after he reportedly assaulted a sheriff and two deputies following his recent conviction.

Investigators say Nicholas St. Clair, 39, was one of two men convicted of drug charges on Oct. 18, following a four-day trial in Somerset County Court.

Authorities say that after learning he was going to jail, St. Clair is accused of “violently resisting” custody, which resulted in an alleged “skirmish” inside the courtroom.

Authorities say the sheriff and two deputies were injured in the ensuing melee, which included breaking a courtroom table.

Authorities say St. Clair allegedly attempted to “jump” toward the sheriff in an attempt to headbutt him.

“My goal is to imprison Mr. St. Clair for years as punishment for dealing drugs in this county, as I said I would do as district attorney. I am grateful for the quick action of our Sheriff’s Department and support our It is clear that this man is a danger to society and I will do everything in my power to ensure he is held accountable for his crimes,” says County Prosecutor Molly Metzgar.

According online court recordsSt. Clair is charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, as well as making terroristic threats and institutional vandalism.

He is being held in the Somerset County Jail on $250,000 bond.
