Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers isn’t using injury as an excuse

AUSTIN – Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers didn’t look like himself in the 30-15 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs last week.

Whether it was the oblique injury or the intimidating Georgia Pass Rush led by Jalon Walker and Mykel Williams, Ewers made some bad throws, questionable decisions and for some reason seemed to miss some of the basics that make a quarterback his had. caliber is expected to possess.

This all led to him being benched late in the first half in favor of Arch Manning, who did not fare much better in his two spells at the helm. Ewers got into a rhythm in the third quarter and made it a one-possession game after the Longhorns trailed 23-0 at halftime, but there were more of the same problems in the fourth quarter.

Heading into Saturday’s ranked game in Nashville against No. 25 Vanderbilt, Ewers has a chance for a big rebound game. Now that the Heisman Trophy is no longer a realistic goal, the individual pressure is off his shoulders, which should ideally allow him to let it go.

Based on how he looked in practice this week, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian expects him to do just that.

“Quinn is having a really good work week,” Sarkisian said Thursday. “I think he’s really put the game plan in place, I think he’s playing with a lot of confidence. And again, I’m looking forward to him getting another opportunity as a competitor, to go back and compete at a high level.”

Sarkisian was asked if Ewers has any mental hurdles to overcome after returning from the injury and said no player is 100 percent at this point in the season. If Ewers is indeed still bothered by his oblique injury, Sarkisian says his starting quarterback would hardly use that as an excuse for the up-and-down performance.

“We’re going into game No. 8. I don’t know if any guy on our team is 100 percent,” Sarkisian said. “So in the life of a competitor, as a football player, you learn to deal with the things that are going on with you: an ankle, a calf, a shoulder, a knee, an oblique, whatever. They all have things And so I don’t… I don’t think in any way that Quinn used that as a crutch or an excuse. That’s the reality of the fact that we’re in week eight of a season, and everyone’s dealing with stuff.”

This season, Ewers has completed 103 of 151 for 1,101 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also rushed for one touchdown.

No. No. 5 Texas and No. 25 Vanderbilt will kick off from Nashville on Saturday at 3:15 PM CT.
