LA Times Ripped for ‘Regrettable’ Decision Not to Endorse Harris

Readers of the Los Angeles Times are outraged by the newspaper’s decision not to endorse a presidential candidate this year, with many of them posting on X that they are canceling their subscriptions due to the “regrettable” move.

Semafor reported Tuesday that the LA Times would not endorse Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for president, at the behest of billionaire businessman Patrick Soon-Shiong. The editorial board was willing to back Harris and has supported the Democratic candidate in each of the past four elections, going back to Barack Obama in 2008.

The decision to withhold endorsement angered some Harris fans, who jumped on X and said they were dumping the paper.

“Mrs. Doubtfire” screenwriter Randi Mayem Singer wrote that she “just canceled her subscription” due to the paper’s non-approval. “WTF is going on with you?” she asked.

Evan Handler, best known for his role as Harry on “Sex and the City,” said he was also canceling his subscription. He said he “didn’t have to spend $15.96 a month just to read what Patrick Soon-Schiong (sic) allows the newspaper’s staff to publish.” He also urged others to cancel their subscriptions by sharing the Times’ cancellation email.

Writer Janice Hough responded to Handler, saying it was a “regrettable” move by the Times.

And another Times reader responded to Handler, saying he had just canceled his subscription. “This is a time for courage, not cowardice,” he said.

Actor and producer Dina Demetrius wrote that it was “unconscionable” that the Times did not endorse Harris.

Sports pundit Jemele Hill said the newspaper was “abandoning” its responsibility to “disrupt people and sometimes tell the uncomfortable truth.”

“Queer as Folk” actor Peter Paige reshared a post calling out Soon-Shiong for being friends with fellow South African billionaire Elon Musk. Paige said he wants to make Soon-Shiong’s decision “a much bigger story” than if the newspaper had simply supported Harris.

You get the idea. But here are a few more people who were angry at the Times:

Roman Polansky

At least the angry ex-LA Times subscribers don’t have to look far for channels that have supported their favorite candidate. The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic and The New Yorker, among others, have officially supported the vice president.
