When we vote, we are alone with our conscience

When we vote, we are alone with our conscience

I’ve been thinking about the Bradley Effect lately. Former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, a black man, lost a gubernatorial contest in 1982 despite being comfortably ahead in the polls. Racism was alive and well then, just as it is today.

I believe many Republicans are struggling with this dilemma. The ones who talk about a good game, have planted lawn signs, applaud raunchy gatherings, have Don Don’s signature red hat, bought a pair of flashy sneakers or a sleek Bible. The fickle and foolish people are scourged and flayed.

Wherever or whenever we vote, we are alone with our conscience. The America we love, the country that survived a bloody civil war, two world wars, the Depression and misguided military setbacks, is in grave danger. Remember the classic, heartwarming holiday movie where Jimmy Stewart wakes up and realizes it was all a bad dream? This isn’t a movie, folks. November 5 is just around the corner. We are staring down the barrel of a gun and in danger of not only blowing our brains out, but blowing away the American dream. Democracy is certainly at stake, and the Constitution will certainly be burned.

Consider the Bradley Effect. In that box your voice is mysterious and sacred. It’s a quiet time. The moment of truth. Ask yourself, ‘Do I really want to do this? Do I really want to betray and belittle the land of the free – and the home of the brave?” I honestly don’t believe the vast majority of Americans want that. Or wants.
