Ohio State’s Ryan Day challenges the Big Ten finals against the Oregon Ducks

Ohio State’s Ryan Day challenges the Big Ten finals against the Oregon Ducks

The No. 1 Oregon Ducks upset the Ohio State Buckeyes 32-31 at Autzen Stadium on Oct. 12. The game ended with some controversy and it is still a topic of conversation for the Buckeyes as they continue to come off a bye week.

Ohio State hasn’t been quiet about the end of the game, with Oregon coach Dan Lanning deliberately using a 12-man on-field penalty to bleed time off the clock. After the Ducks’ win, with many praising Coach Lanning for his wisdom, the NCAA changed that rule so that the defense does not benefit from a penalty in the final two minutes of either half.

Additionally, the Buckeyes believed there was a mistake on the final play, with quarterback Will Howard sliding down as time expired.

Ryan Day contacts Big Ten Office about final Oregon Game

On the final play of the Oregon vs. Ohio State ran Buckeyes Howard up the middle with the clock running. Ohio State crawled into field goal range to try for a game-winning field goal, but the clock ran out after Howard slid down. Coach Day claims there was still time on the clock when Howard went down, but the officials determined the clock had run out.

According to Ohio State writer Dan Hope, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day sent the final play of the Oregon game to the Big Ten Conference. Day tried to make it clear that there was one second left on the clock when Howard slid and Ohio State called a timeout. The Big Ten shut this down, saying there was no time on the clock.

If Day was right, Ohio State would have the ball with one second left at Oregon’s 26-yard line. Just one point short, Ohio State could have made a 43-yard field goal from this spot for the victory.

The good news for Ohio State is that their season is not over by any means. Especially considering the College Football Playoff has now expanded to 12 teams. If Ohio State wins the rest of their games, one blemish in Oregon won’t keep them out of the playoffs.

Ohio State still has a number of hurdles, but if they win the remaining games on the schedule, they will most likely play Oregon again in the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis.

Next up for Ohio State is a matchup with Nebraska, while No. 1 Oregon hosts No. 20 Illinois.
