Patient with severe lung damage due to dengue is recovering in Hyderabad-Telangana today

Hyderabad: A 51-year-old businessman from Nacharam who suffered severe lung damage due to dengue with significant drop in oxygen saturation level was successfully treated by critical care specialists at Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar.

The patient was admitted in critical condition and was given ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a life support system that temporarily takes over the functions of a patient’s heart and lungs, by intensive care specialists Dr. K. Venkataramana and Dr. Sringala Devijan.

Within six days of starting ECMO support, the patient recovered, the doctors said. Normally dengue does not damage the lungs to this extent, but sometimes the body’s own immune system attacks the organs. In this case, the immune system attacked the lungs, causing severe lung damage. Many people consider ECMO treatment as a last resort and may hesitate, but if started at the right time, the chances of recovery are significantly higher, doctors say.
