Federal aid approved for Upstate New York counties affected by summer flooding

Federal funding has been approved to help several Upstate New York counties hit by severe flooding in August.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that President Biden has issued a Major Disaster Declaration for the storms that hit Suffolk, Oswego and Lewis counties on August 18 and 19, allowing funds to be used for public infrastructure repairs.

Although homeowners will not receive direct assistance, the declaration gives New York access to FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Programs, which aim to support efforts to reduce future disaster risks. Local governments and nonprofits statewide are eligible for these grants.
