Evans Kiplagat Moi, who took the images, told the story TUKO.co.ke that his family faces severe financial constraints.

He revealed that when they arrived at the boy’s home, it was clear the family was struggling to make ends meet.

No food was prepared for lunch, and his mother, with a weary expression, was unsure what the family would eat for dinner.

“The father, a charcoal burner, supplements the family’s income with various jobs,” he said.

Despite his efforts, their living conditions are dire as the family shares one blanket and has no mattress.

At night, they huddle together for warmth, using torn clothing as makeshift covers.

The little boy and his siblings walk more than 5 miles to and from school every day, braving the elements barefoot.

They depend on a seasonal stream for water, but when it dries up they have to move even further to find a source.

Electricity is a luxury they cannot afford.

At night, a small D-light solar lamp illuminates their home, their only source of illumination as they struggle to survive.

This family’s story, especially the image of the boy who graduated without shoes, touched the hearts of many across the country.
