Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor don’t like fans sharing Romeo and Juliet clips online

The costars also discussed the “intimate” nature of some of the romantic scenes in Romeo + Juliet. “We have certain scenes that are particularly vulnerable,” Connor said. Zegler added, “That’s something that really makes you say, ‘I don’t know anything about that.’ It’s our Broadway debut, it’s great that people are there and are eager to go, but it’s still a Broadway show. We adhere to the Broadway show rules, even though we are not currently on Broadway like every other Broadway show.

While the stars may not be super excited about all the clips, they also know that it’s part of our super-connected, always-on-our-phones world. “It’s true what they say about the Internet,” Zegler said. “As beautiful as our production is and we try to delete things, someone recorded it on a screen. It’s on someone’s phone. It’s just going to continue until we die.”

Yet they would rather you just be in the moment, appreciate the stage production for what it is and not try to record it to share or watch later. “We want you to be in the room with us, and thankfully it didn’t feel that way not in the room with us, but that kind of unconscious knowledge can be a little bit damaging,” Zegler said. Connor, who plays Romeo, added that the Romeo + Juliet team “desperately trying to keep the audience on their toes and staying two steps ahead and keeping the audience surprised,” as everyone knows the story of these two star-crossed lovers, one of the most popular romantic tragedies of all time. Leaked video clips make those kinds of surprises even more difficult.

“We’re hoping that it won’t have any impact on how people react to the show and how people experience the show because I think it’s a very charged show,” Kit Connor said. “There’s a lot of emotional charge, physical charge, sexual charge. There’s a lot of energy in it and we want people to feel that and not feel like they’ve seen it before.”
