Former Clover employees sentenced to two life sentences for killing security guards

Terence Tegg

Two former Clover employees who worked at the dairy manufacturer in Olifantsfontein on the East Rand were sentenced to two life sentences on Monday.

Mohale Cleta Shokane, 34, and Vusimuzi Makula Duuba, 38, were found guilty of killing two security guards stationed outside the facility during a violent protest on February 17, 2022.

A violent mob of striking Clover workers unleashed an attack on security guards outside the facility, captured in footage that went viral on social media.

Security officer Terence Tegg died at the scene, while his colleague JJ Cassanga died four months later due to complications suffered from his injuries.

Tegg’s fiancée and the Cassanga family approached Afriforum’s private prosecution unit, which worked closely with the police and the prosecutor to gather evidence and complete a dossier to present to the court.

During the trial, in the Johannesburg High Court, the judge rejected Shokane and Duumba’s evidence, describing their versions of events as a “thumb and sideshow”.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says key video footage from nearby factories, together with witness statements, identified the Shokane and Duuba.

She says that in addition to the two life sentences, each killer was also sentenced to an additional six years for assault and malicious damage to property.

The court described their actions as barbaric and completely unnecessary and noted that they showed no remorse.

says Mjonondwane

The verdict is a stark reminder that violent acts, especially those committed in the context of protests or demonstrations, will not be tolerated.
