21-year-old man arrested after leaving debtor’s note outside Tampines flat

A 21-year-old man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a loan harassment case.

Police said in a statement that they were alerted to the case on Oct 20 at a residential unit at 91 Tampines Street.

An accounts receivable note was left on a stool outside the front door of the unit.

Officers identified and arrested the man the same day.

A mobile phone and a debtor’s note were seized as evidence. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect may be involved in other loan harassment cases.

The man will be charged in court under the Moneylenders Act on October 22.

People found guilty of intimidation of loan sharks for the first time face a prison sentence of five years, a fine of between $5,000 and $50,000, and caning of up to six strokes.

Police said they have zero tolerance for loan harassment and those who deliberately cause annoyance and disruption to public safety and security will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

The public is advised to stay away from loan sharks and not cooperate with them or assist them in any way. Call the police on ‘999’ if you suspect or know anyone who may be involved in lending.
