Boos as David James denies child Liverpool fan to score at Anfield – TWICE! -Liverpool FC

Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper David James divided opinion by twice saving an 11-year-old’s penalty at half-time as Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1.

In what some see as a very funny moment and others see as a petty move, James denied a young Liverpool supporter their dream moment at Anfield when he saved both of the fan’s penalties in front of the Kop.

As is sometimes the case, half-time provided a lucky few with the opportunity to take to the pitch and score at the Kop End, something every supporter will have dreamed of.

Well, that’s how it usually works.

However, this week former goalkeeper James decided to break the trend of allowing supporters to score by denying a young boy twice from the spot.

The boy’s first effort went to the keeper’s right, with James diving to keep the shot out before keeping the ball close and playing with the Kop as the crowd booed.

However, the young Red was allowed another attempt, which everyone expected James to let in.

Once again, the 54-year-old didn’t read the script and saved the second kick with a flying left leg. Honestly, it looked like he was possibly trying to duck out of the way here!

Nevertheless, he saved the penalty and had the crowd booing the goalkeeper who played 277 times for Liverpool between 1992 and 1999.

LFC TV’s Peter McDowall, who hosted the on-field proceedings, then said: ‘You weren’t supposed to make it.

“Thanks, Jamo, for ruining that young boy’s day!”

The 11-year-old wasn’t too happy with James either, as he shrugged in bewilderment and tried to put him at ease after hugging the 6ft tall former goalkeeper.

Redmen TV’s Paul Machin filmed the incident and described the audience’s feelings brilliantly, laughing as he couldn’t quite believe what he had seen.

“The amount of things he let in in that goal as a paid Liverpool player,” Machin said, referring to James’ time with the Reds.

“What arlarse, what arlarse!”

This is a Scouse term that can be used to describe someone as a bit of a grumpy older person. It’s hard to succinctly explain what the phrase means, but James was certainly one on Sunday!
