Norris was philosophical about his fate after a spirited drive, having recovered from a poor first lap when he squandered his fourth pole in five races and fell to fourth.

“Not my best race,” he said. “With the loss in the first corner and just the racing at the end it clearly wasn’t enough – so that’s life. I didn’t do well enough, but I tried well, so I’m doing my best. best.

“Sometimes my best isn’t good enough. It just wasn’t our day today.”

He added that he considered talking to the stewards about their decision, but felt that “there are plenty of scenarios where people wouldn’t be punished in cases like what happened.”

He said it was difficult to know whether he should have immediately given his seat back during the race.

“It’s difficult to know, but maybe that was the only chance I got. Max defended well and it was not easy to overtake.”

Verstappen said he got through a difficult race without attacking the pace in his car.

The race was won by Charles Leclerc, who led Carlos Sainz home in a Ferrari one-two. Leclerc’s victory moved him to 275 points in third place in the championship.

“They worked hard for the upgrades and it is now paying off. We couldn’t have dreamed of anything better.

“It all worked and we are very happy. Now we are aiming for the constructors’ title.”

It was Leclerc’s first win in America, his third this year and eighth of his career as Ferrari enjoyed their first US Grand Prix one-two since 2006.

Ferrari’s success at the Circuit of the Americas took them to 496 points in the team’s title race behind McLaren on the 544 and Red Bull on the 504, with the Mexican and Brazilian Grands Prix due to take place over the next two consecutive weekends.
