Man in court over toddler’s death – FBC News

A man accused of causing the death of a one-year-old child in Cunningham Nasinu last week will be arraigned in the Suva Magistrates Court today.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, has been charged with one count of murder, one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of act intended to cause serious harm.

Police say medical officials alerted Totogo police Thursday evening to a case in which a child was pronounced dead at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

The case was referred to the police because the victim had suffered visible injuries as a result of an assault.

Police have identified the suspect as the de facto partner of the child’s mother, and it has been revealed that he reportedly has a history of abuse.

Police say investigations show the suspect also assaulted the victim’s three-year-old brother, who was found in the home with visible injuries.

Investigators consulted the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, formally charging the suspect.
